Old World charm and Tuscan hilltown ambience were the inspiration for this Durango, Colorado custom residence. In addition to the use of native Colorado stone and stucco as dominant exterior materials, the form, massing and proportion were critical in establishing a ‘village’ appearance for this single family home. The primary circulation elements are a long linear barrel vault and a sculptural plastered curved stairway. The kitchen and master suite anchor each respective end of the barrel vault. The major design theme was to create ‘timeless’ architecture through the use of materials and design elements. The contrast between the light and dark portions of the home achieved by window placement and design allow the sculptural qualities and subtle light patterns to emerge.
